Our love affair with these sweet, loving & quirky toy dogs began years ago with a picture in a book of dog breeds. The woman was in a garden surrounded by 8 or 10 spaniels all trying to kiss her face at the same time and her enormous smile spoke volumes.
All English Toys seem to have been Black and Tan up to the time of King Charles II (these were later called the King Charles); the different colors emerged much later.
The English Toy was a favorite of Mary Queen of Scots, where it is said that her favorite refused to leave her, even on the scaffold.
ETS are good companions and get along with other family pets.
Always monitor your spaniel in the heat and keep fresh water handy.

Our first English Toy was a ruby boy named Taffin (Kis'n Karbon Kopy). He was by far the most intelligent dog I've known, debunking the myth that this charming breed is not that bright and became a true and cherished friend. Years after his passing we decided to look for an ETS as unlike Taffin as possible and that’s how the lovely black and tan female we called Missy entered our lives.
There are four varieties, each with its own proper name: red and white (Blenheim); black and tan (King Charles); white, black, and tan (Prince Charles); and a solid red (Ruby).
The English Toy Spaniel was officially recognized by the AKC in 1886. A true spaniel—affectionate, alert, and merry. Not to be confused with the larger Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with flat skull & longer muzzle, ETS are easily recognized by their short-nose (like a Pug) large eyes and domed head.
